This comes through not only in the flashback scenes, but in how strongly Rue feels about the men that her mother brings into the house romantically she remarked in Episode 7 about how her mother's latest fling wasn't good enough to sit in her father's seat. We see her caring for him at times, and it's clear how much he meant to her. It's been no secret that Rue's father died of cancer in the time before the series' timeline began, and it's also been no secret just how close Rue was with her father. Rue finally gives in and wears the clothes that Jules recommends-but it's later in the Season 1 finale that we get clarity on why, exactly, Rue's been dressing this way for the duration of the season, and it's not just a bit of Billie Eilish 2019 teen style. Her style tends to feature masculine-inspired elements, and she is often sporting Converse and printed button-up shirts.
